Reconnect From Within

During Oprah and Eckhart Tolle’s online class covering chapter 2 of the book A New Earth, the two discussed thought processes.

A caller named Heather from Vancouver Island, Canada by way of skype asked: “When we get free of the ego, where does that energy go?”

Oprah replied, “Good question.”

Eckhart answered: “The ego basically consists of compulsive, conditioned thought processes. So we are not aware of, so we identify so closely with our stream of thinking that we don’t even know that we are thinking. So all of this energy is used up in continuous, to a large extent, useless thinking. Even psychologists have found out (even psychologists who are not that interested in spiritual things), they looked at the nature of human thought and discovered that 98 or 99% of our thoughts are quite useless and repetitive. They are not really needed.”

What an amazing discovery to think much of what we mentally fixate on and obsess about is utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of our lives. It has been said that 90% of what we worry about is interest paid in advance on something we may never own. Eckhart citing psychological studies confirmed this.

The Bible differentiates between the spirit, soul, and body quite clearly in 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Undoubtedly we human beings are a trinity, which if we ever understood and fully grasped much of our internal struggling would be resolved.

Sadly most in western society focus on the physical and mental arena, never really discovering or entering into the life of the spirit deep within. Ironically it is during times of adversity and intense turmoil that people most likely go within and develop inwardly.

For this reason God Almighty allows human suffering, because it develops our spirituality within. Christ Himself grew inwardly by that which He Himself suffered (see Hebrews 5:8).  The apostle Paul said, “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Therefore the very things that seemingly afflict and crush us in life, are often nothing more than circumstances that facilitate a personal awakening and inner transformation. It has been said what happens is not as important as what happens within us.

The apostle Paul said the same thing when acknowledging his own suffering, “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16).

So while the world at large focuses on external things and performance, another world is in operation beyond that which man can see. It is a spiritual world that happens within the secret place within our own hearts. There inwardly we can grasp the heavenly, see supernaturally, and get a glimpse into eternity.

Once we learn how to quiet our mind and go deeper inside to access the spirit within, we can free ourselves from mental agony and anguish. Upon doing so, the former energy much and for some entirely devoted to mental analysis can then be freed and utilized to enjoy the experience of the power of presence.

Presence, Eckhart says, “is a dimension of consciousness that most people still don’t know exists and really this is the essence of the teaching.”
